Ideas

I would put one faction on one side which would be less technologically advanced whereas on the other side of the battlefield there wold be a faction which would be more technologically advanced but would have less members. This is to make it look like a battle is going on over Mars between a poweful faction, which would be the wealthy ones that want Mars all for themselves, and a faction that is fighting to the people so that Mars can be populated by humans due to Earth's overpopulation.

Photoshop Example

This is a modified image of Stonehenge. I have used Photoshop to cut and paste an image of Stonehenge that had a normal sky into an image that had a stormy sky to make this its background. I used the "Quick select" tool to select and separate the stones from the sky. I used the "burn" tool to make the grass and stones darker than in the original image.

Unit 1:

Past, Present and Future Postcards

Future
Present
Past

World War 2

Black Plague

Futuristic city

Great fire of London

I am going to replicate the evolution of man to show how the wildlife has evolved into mechanical bodies and I will be using the example of a cheetah for this.
Brexit

2016 Olympics

I would use these two images to create an accurate representation of a futuristic city. I would also try to include some futuristic exoskeletons that may be used in the future.

This idea consists of using these images to create a "postcard" that shows the trenches and the victory of the Western Allies which included the surrender of Germany as well as the death of Adolf Hitler, which was the most important event of the war as it stopped his leadership.

One idea is having an image of the black plague as the background and then inserting the image of the skulls and fade the image of the plague doctor into the background. My second idea is to use the image of the skulls as the background and then use the quick selection tool and the mask to take away the eyes. The images of the black doctor and the black plague would be inserted into the eyes. The skulls would represent death and the images inside the eyes would be the last things that those people saw before they died due to the black plague.

This "postcard" would be chronologically ordered from left to right. Since the Great Fire of London started at a bakery the first image would be a painting of the fire that started it. In the middle there would be an image of the fire elsewhere, showing how it spreaded and destroyed buildings and at the end of the images there would be a current image which shows how the buildings and areas have been reconstructed.

My inital idea for this is to include the background of a cracked union from the UK and the EU, which shows how their relationship has now broken down and are no longer related to each other, editing in the image of the signs that shows Brexit and EU which would be roughly around the middle pointing to where EU is and towards where the UK's exit from Europe is located.

Final image

These are the images that were used in this exercise. The goal of the exercise was to utilise the green screen to take out the background of the lady with ease and then put it on top of the sky without any of the green background left around the lady, including the green that stays on the lady after which is called colour bleeding.

This is the final image of my green screen exercise. Before I started editing and removing the green screen I put the two images together by using "Select all", "Copy" and then "Paste" on the image of the sky. I got rid of the green screen background by using the "colour range" option which is located in ‘Select>Colour Range …’. While using this tool you must click on the background with the eyedrop tool to select it, and then choose "Invert" so that it selects the lady instead. In my case, the bottom part of the background was not selected because it is darker. What I did was hold shift and then click on that darker part with the eyedrop tool to include it in the selection. When I made sure that all of the green background was selected I then created a mask which allowed the sky background to show through. However, some green remained around the outline of the lady. This event is called "colour bleeding", which is when two colours are too close and therefore merge. To take the green that was left I used the "Saturation and Hue" adjustment layer. When I opened the layer I had to change the drop down menu's option from "master" to "greens" so that it only affected the green colours. After this I had to change the saturation to -100 and use the eyedrop tool to select the green in her hair. So that this only affected the lady and not the background of the sky I had to click on a specific option so that only the lady's layer was affected.

Design 2(final)

My initial idea for my future postcard was a war on Mars that would show off the technological advances of the future as well as what a future war could look like. When I finished my initial design I thought about how I could improve it. I decided to make the background look more battle-damaged by using the "Brightness and contrast tool" to lower the brightness and increase the contrast of the original background that I used. I also decided to include some more of the original image of the tank to portray that they're different armies, as the dust and darkness would distinguish them. I also edited out the normal sky included in the background and added some storm to make the environment more dynamic. However to do this I had to change the layer's positioning so that it didn't overlap the background and other images.

For my past postcard I decided to go with the Black Plague. My initial idea was to keep an image of what the Black Plague's environment might've looked like and edit into it an image of a plague doctor as well as some skulls. However, I decided that this was too simple and redesigned it completely. I chose to go with the image of the skulls instead as the background, and used the quick select tool and the mask to edit out the eyes of these skulls. After this I edited into the eyes the most important sections of each of the images that I used. To do this I had to change the positioning of the layers so that these images did not overlap the skulls and would stay as the inside of the eyes. I chose the skulls because they represent death, and I decided to edit the images into the eyes so that it look liked that's what the skulls are seeing, which would represent the last thing these people saw before they died.

David Hockney
John Stezaker

John Stezaker’s work is based around using old photographs and mixing them together to make new ones. I find this interesting as he mixes pictures to create new appearances for people and sometimes uses an image of a background instead of another person, which makes his work unique. I chose the images below because I thought that they were the most unique, especially the image that includes a skull as it gives it an aspect of X-ray and the image with the background inserted into the middle, which is abstract and out of place yet it still fits in with the photograph used behind it.

Unit 1 Project evaluation

Design 2(final)

This is my present postcard. I chose the theme of Brexit as it is an important recent event that directly affects the country and the whole of Europe. I used the "quick select" tool to select the parts of the images that I didn't want, and then used the layer mask to hide those parts. For the image of "VOTE STAY/LEAVE" I used the green screen method which consists of using the colour range tool to select the part that I didn't want, as it was a different colour than the rest of the image, and then masked it. I also had to adjust the saturation with the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, as colour bleeding took place and the colour merged with one of the parts of the image. This image was also chosen because it represents the opinion of the UK on the voting, where everyone was saying they were going to vote stay and the end result was leave. On the EU part, I included an image saying "LET'S STAY TOGETHER" as they partially wanted the Uk to stay as part of EU. These two images also had their opacity reduced so that they blended in better with the background. In the center of the background I decided to include a sign that points to Brexit and EU, wich signalises what each side means. I used the burn tool on the background to create some shadows that make the sign look like it is actually there and is a part of the background and general image.

My Unit 1 project was based around past, present and future postcards, which in my opinion is an interesting theme because it has a lot of possibilites in regard to ideas.

The most enjoyable part of the project for me was modifying the images and joining them together on Photoshop as well as experimenting to see which methods were the most effective and what combinations looked the best. I have learned new techniques such as the green screening method, which was very useful in my present postcard as well as using the burn tool to make background shadows, which I mainly used in my future postcard. The technique that I would like to develop the most would be the burn tool for shadows, as it is a technique that can make incredible effects when it is mastered.

Through this project I researched some collage artists as well as historical events. I researched gaming for my future postcard as many games are futuristic and include examples of how wars or civilisation may look in the future, which made me include robots and plasma tanks. I feel like most successful part of my project is my final photo shopped designs as I believe they are creative and tell the story that was intended. However, throughout my present postcard I had problems with the green screening method as I was not selecting the layer properly and it was selecting the colours of a different layer than the one that I wanted to edit.

If I was given the chance to complete the project again I would re-do my current images faster as I would already know these techniques beforehand and would concentrate on adding more things and making them blend in more so that they look like they're part of the background better.

My idea for this present postcard is to use Rio as the background, with team GB, the mascot and the official logo included in the image and possibly faded.

David Hockney is an English painter, draughtsman, print maker, stage designer and photographer. An important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.

The work that I researched is "Joiners", which was a piece of work that he created by making collages using photographs that he had taken himself of that specific place. He did this to show various points of view that you wouldn't normally see from only one perspective.

For example, in the collage he did of Pearblossom route, he used the photographs he had taken to show the view of the driver as well as the view of the passenger, showing multiple points of view at once.
